I like to think that I am an unashamed geek. I work as a postdoctoral cancer researcher using flies as a model (I have yet to gain proportionate powers from their bite).
To cut myself off from the horror that is London Tube travel, I have started reading novels - usually of the Sci-fi/fantasy flavour. I have also adapted the one hand page turning technique that is essential for tube reading.
In the handful of hours where I'm not working or doing day to day chores I enjoy watching TV shows that are either sci-fi/history based or edgy, eg Lost, Rome and Dexter.
I also enjoy reading comics, but outside of the Walking Dead graphic novels I find myself collecting more than reading. This is mainly as comic reading is reserved for non-busy weekends in a sunny garden. These occur with a frequency similar to observing eclipses.
Lastly, when I'm not doing any of the above, I try to work on getting some creative writing published in comics, TV, film or novels. From short-films and sketches to sci/fi fantasy epics and sell-out feel good films about "down on their luck northern communities" my ideas are at least varied if nothing else. I keep making half-hearted attempts at seeing some of these through for fear of becoming an annoying fanboy who makes the unsubstantiated claim of "I could do better than that!"
The fun thing about writing is that it has opened up a whole new world of procastination for me. Creating this livejournal is only the latest in such endeavours and it is proving to be a very effective distraction as it has virtually nothing to do with writing and virtually everything to do with being a geek. Let's see how it develops...
